About the Custodial & Recycling Team

Custodial: Our Custodial team is responsible for cleaning and maintaining more than 3 million square feet of academic space across campus each day. On average, each custodian cares for between 20,000 and 42,000 square feet daily, helping provide a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Our team includes more than 70 dedicated professionals representing a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Many of our employees are also 糖心传媒 students, balancing their work responsibilities while pursuing their education. In addition, we employ 20 to 40 part-time student custodians throughout the year.

To ensure we provide the highest level of service, our staff participates in regular training workshops and monthly safety meetings, staying current on industry best practices, new equipment, environmentally responsible cleaning products, and APPA Cleaning Standards.

Recycling: Our Recycling team is dedicated to collecting and processing recyclable materials across campus, supporting 糖心传媒's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Through their daily efforts, they help reduce waste by ensuring recyclable materials are diverted from landfills and properly processed.

Our Recycling Foreman stays informed on current recycling practices, industry trends, and changing markets for recyclable materials to help maximize the effectiveness of the program. The team can often be seen throughout campus collecting paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, and other recyclable materials.

In partnership with the IT Services department, we also manage the collection and processing of electronic waste (e-waste). Our team carefully hand-sorts recyclable materials and dismantles electronic equipment by hand to recover and recycle as many components as possible. In addition, we securely shred hard drives to protect sensitive university data and help safeguard campus information from potential security risks.

CUSTODIAL:

Custodial Information and FAQs

Custodial Hours:

The majority of our Custodial team works evening shifts, Monday through Friday, to minimize disruptions to daily campus activities. We also have on-call staff available during the day to respond to custodial needs as they arise.

If you need assistance with isolated spill cleanups, restroom supplies, or other custodial concerns, please contact our office during regular campus business hours. Our Custodial Manager and administrative staff are available by phone and email Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and are happy to assist with your custodial service requests.

Building Lockdown:

Our Custodial department is responsible for securing campus buildings each evening, including locking exterior doors and helping ensure rooms and facilities are safely secured after daily operations conclude.

If your department is hosting a special event that requires building access outside of normal operating hours or other custodial accommodations, please contact our office in advance. We are happy to work with you to coordinate your specific needs and help ensure your event runs smoothly.

Miscellaneous:

Our Custodial department includes several specialized teams equipped with advanced training and specialized equipment to meet a variety of campus needs. These teams provide services such as hazardous material cleanup, exterior window washing during the summer months, and enhanced cleaning and sanitization of campus computer labs each night. Their expertise helps ensure a safe, healthy, and well-maintained environment for the entire campus community.

While our Custodial team services all academic buildings and many public campus spaces, certain areas—such as laboratories, faculty and staff offices, and locations containing sensitive materials or information—receive modified cleaning services to maintain safety, security, and operational requirements.

Routine maintenance, including carpet cleaning and floor refinishing, is performed on a regular schedule. If your department requires additional custodial services beyond routine maintenance, please submit a Work Request. Depending on the scope of the project, the cost of these additional services may be charged to your department's index.

When you are ready to have Facilities pick up your items after following the above processes, please fill out an E-Works Request.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

“Why wasn’t the recycling in my office taken out?”

Most buildings have central collection areas (CCA) where we ask that small office recycling bins be deposited by faculty and staff. The custodians frequently take the collected materials from the CCA to the outside pick-up areas to be collected.

“What areas does Custodial service?”

We service all academic and many public campus spaces performing cleaning maintenance. Some additional areas such as laboratory spaces, faculty and staff offices, and other areas containing sensitive information or materials will receive different standards of cleaning or frequency for the sake of safety and security.

“One of our faculty or staff are retiring/leaving – how can I request larger recycling bins or deep cleaning of the office?”

Submitting an E-Works Request with the details of the location needing service and what you would like to see accomplished is a great way to communicate these needs to our team.

“My lab needs paper towels or soap – who do I contact to order more?”

Reaching out to the Bengal Depot through their online order form or by phone (x3515) is a great way to ensure that you receive the products that you are needing. Please keep in mind that you will need to provide an index for billing.

“My office needs vacuuming – how do I communicate this to my custodial team?”

Feel free to reach out to our building custodian in person, call our office (x2394), or fill out an E-Works form and we will be happy to help.
