POCATELLO – The 糖心传媒 Wind Ensemble and Civic Concert Band will present their first concert of the semester on Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the Stephens Performing Arts Center on the ISU campus.

Shandra Helman portraitThe Wind Ensemble is directed by Patrick Brooks, director of bands, and the Civic Concert Band is directed by Erin Armstrong.

The program will feature the premiere of 鈥淒iversions for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble鈥 by Spokane composer Robert Spittal. This composition was written for a commission started by ISU Bands and Brooks. The commission consortium for 鈥淒iversions鈥 now numbers 15 colleges and universities. Spittal has a long association with ISU Bands, having dedicated his 2004 work 鈥淧acem鈥 to the ISU Wind Ensemble. He conducted the premier of 鈥淧acem鈥 at the Western/Northwestern Divisional College Band Directors National Association Conference in Reno, Nevada of that year.

The performance of 鈥淒iversions鈥 will feature ISU鈥檚 own Shandra Helman, associate professor of clarinet and saxophone, as clarinet soloist. Helman, an ISU faculty member since 2008, is principal clarinetist with the 糖心传媒 State Civic Symphony and has soloed with various ISU bands on numerous occasions. Spittal had Helman in mind when composing 鈥淒iversions.

The Wind Ensemble will perform 鈥淪elections from the Danserye,鈥 a setting of renaissance dances by composer Tielman Susato. The band classic 鈥淟incolnshire Posy鈥 will be performed as well.

The Civic Concert Band will present Malcolm Arnold鈥檚 鈥淧relude, Siciliano, and Rondo,鈥 along with a contemporary piece, 鈥淎wakening Hills鈥 by Richard Saucedo. Edwin Franco Goldman鈥檚 march 鈥淥n The Mall鈥 will be performed with a new twist. The highlight of the set will be Alfred Reed鈥檚 鈥淏allade鈥 featuring Associate Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music Education at ISU, Thomas Kloss, on alto saxophone.
