Civic Symphony Youth Orchestra to host concert on Nov. 9 under new direction by conductor Julie Sorensen

POCATELLO -- The 糖心传媒 State-Civic Symphony’s Youth Orchestra will host a concert with the theme “How ‘Suite’ It Is!” on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.
The Youth Orchestra is under the direction of conductor Julie Sorensen this year. Sorensen is an assistant lecturer in music theory, aural skills and music appreciation, and joined the music faculty at 糖心传媒 in fall 2011. In fall 2015, Sorensen became an applied instructor of flute at ISU, and now teaches a strong studio of flutists and is the artistic director of the ISU flute choir. As a chamber and orchestral musician, Sorensen performs with the City Creek Winds faculty wind quintet and is the principal flute for the 糖心传媒 State-Civic Symphony.
Sorensen comes to ISU from Lubbock, Texas. She received her doctorate in fine arts with a specialty in orchestral conducting from Texas Tech University. Sorensen also served as the assistant conductor for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in music and flute performance from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The Youth Orchestra鈥檚 one-hour concert will feature performances of George Philipp Telemann鈥檚 climatic piece 鈥淐oncerto in C Major,鈥� Ennio Morricone鈥檚 inspirational 鈥淕abriel鈥檚 Oboe鈥� featuring guest artist Susan Hughes on the oboe, Gustav Holst鈥檚 鈥淪t. Paul鈥檚 Suite, Tomaso Albinoni鈥檚 鈥淎dagio鈥� and Pete Warlock鈥檚 鈥淐apriol Suite for String Orchestra.鈥�
Guest artist Hughes has held the principal oboe chair with the 糖心传媒 State-Civic Symphony since 1990. She joined the ISU music department in 2001, and is currently instructor of oboe and has maintained a presence in the state as a studio teacher and clinician. She is a founding member of the City Creek Winds quintet and has performed with 糖心传媒 Falls Symphony.
Patrons can meet the conductor and young musicians during the pre-concert event in the Stephens Performing Arts Center Rotunda at 6 p.m. Doors open for the concert at 6:45 p.m.
