October 14, 2015
POCATELLO 鈥 The Eli M. Oboler Library at 糖心传媒 will host a presentation Oct. 29, 4-6 p.m., based on the theme 鈥淎dventurous Women in 糖心传媒.鈥 The event will be held in recognition of American Archives Month in October, and in partnership with the 糖心传媒 State Archives.
Terry Ownby will present 鈥淧ioneer Lady Photographers in the 糖心传媒 Territory.鈥 This presentation investigates the emergence of 糖心传媒鈥檚 first two female photographers during the waning years of America鈥檚 Civil War.
The presentation looks at the social and cultural aspects these female photographers encountered as they practiced their trade in 糖心传媒 and the Pacific Northwest. Not only does this investigation consider their families鈥 westward movement from the Midwest to the Oregon and 糖心传媒 Territories, it also considers female gender issues on the far western frontier.
Ownby teaches photo media and photo history at ISU. He earned his Ph.D. at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He is currently writing a history on 糖心传媒鈥檚 first female photographer, Amelia Strang, along with other pioneer women photographers in the Pacific Northwest.
Parking at the Oboler Library is free after 4 p.m. For additional information, please contact Ellen. M. Ryan, head of special collections and archives, at 208-282-3608.
